Durbin wants warrant info from Justice Department

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has asked the Justice Department to determine how many arrest warrants are missing from a national criminal database and to ensure states can use existing grants to get them entered.

Durbin made the requests in a letter sent Wednesday to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, a day before a Senate subcommittee is set to hear bills proposed by Durbin and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., addressing the issue. Both bills propose boosting federal funding to hunt and extradite fugitives, and input names of fugitives into the FBI database.

A Justice Department spokesman said the department shares Durbin’s interest in ensuring warrants get entered and will review his request.
