Durbin wants warrant info from Justice Department

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has asked the Justice Department to determine how many arrest warrants are missing from a national criminal database and to ensure states can use existing grants to get them entered.

Durbin made the requests in a letter sent Wednesday to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, a day before a Senate subcommittee is set to hear bills proposed by Durbin and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., addressing the issue. Both bills propose boosting federal funding to hunt and extradite fugitives, and input names of fugitives into the FBI database.

A Justice Department spokesman said the department shares Durbin’s interest in ensuring warrants get entered and will review his request.

The list is designed to provide hiring professionals with information about important screening topics in preparation for the upcoming year.

employeescreenIQs 2009 Background-screening Trends

1. The Importance of Thorough Background Checks in a Shrinking Job Market

Considering the state of the economy, the job market is destined to become even more competitive, which in turn could lead some individuals to stretch the truth in order to secure employment. These new employees will be expected to fulfill a wide range of jobs and responsibilities, thus it is imperative the items listed on their resumes truly reflect the experience they are claiming. Resume fluffing isnt the only area employers need to focus on; conviction rates among job applicants are also on the rise. Now more than ever, hiring professionals need to be sure their employment screening firms are conducting thorough, detailed background checks. employeescreenIQ finds a 56 percent discrepancy rate between what is reported on a resume and what is found when conducting employment and education verifications. The company has also found a significant increase in criminal hit rates over the last year.

George Carlin’s Boston connection

After George Carlin received a general discharge from the Air Force in 1957, he took an announcing job at the now defunct Boston radio station WEZE. (There is a Christian radio station WEZE in Boston today but it’s not the same one).

Here’s what Carlin had to say about his three-month stint in the Hub during a 1992 interview with the Boston Herald. Carlin died Sunday of heart failure. He was 71.

“It was a network station and we still had soap operas and network stuff and real cornball music like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett,” he said. “I had to play that and keep a straight face and make believe I liked it.”

Bankruptcy may hurt applicant’s status for renting

Q: I recently filed for bankruptcy in an effort to stop foreclosure proceedings against me. Now I am planning to move and rent a home or apartment. Does the bankruptcy filing disqualify me from renting?

Landlord attorney James McKinley replies: The filing of a bankruptcy does not automatically disqualify you from renting a home or apartment, but it certainly won’t help.

A bankruptcy filing will be reported by the three major consumer credit reporting agencies for seven years and will negatively affect your credit rating. Almost all landlords and property management companies will require you to fill out a rental application, pay an application fee, and consent to a consumer credit report on all proposed adult occupants.

Landlords and property management companies will have several criteria on which they determine a prospective tenant’s eligibility to rent property. These include income level, credit score, employment verification, rental history, eviction history and, of course, prior bankruptcy filings.

School Board Member Wants Superintendent Fired

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Students in public schools across Miami-Dade County will soon see fewer teachers, fewer school counselors and fewer folks working in the principal’s office, and Thursday one school board member was pointing his finger squarely at the superintendent.

With now more than 2000 school district positions slashed, and a $284 million money crunch to contend with, it’s likely no one associated with the Miami-Dade school district or its board will come out of this with a sterling reputation. But if board member Renier Diaz de la Portilla has his way, Superintendent Dr. Rudy Crew will feel most of the sting of the disapproving public.

"In light of the fact that the superintendent has not accepted a pay cut, last night stated on the record he would not reopen his contract to lower his salary, and in fact is trying to move forward with a bonus, in light of the dire economic circumstances of this community," said Diaz de la Portilla. "I think it’s a real slap in the face to the employees we laid off."

Free Credit Repair Help - Free Credit Reports

On December 4, 2003, President George W. Bush made the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions act a law. This law allows all Americans to have access to one single free copy of their credit report annually. This law came to be because of the increase in identity theft. It also came into be because citizens wanted free access to their credit reports.

Right now, all citizens of the United State have the option of acquiring a free copy of their credit report from one of the three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. This single credit report is important to individuals in the United States because the report determines whether or not they are a good credit risk. A credit report is used by just about every lending institution and major credit card company.

Random student drug testing ineffective, invasion of privacy

As a senior at Allentown High School, I served as vice president of Life-Savers, a club dedicated to preventing student substance abuse. This year our Board of Education proposed a policy that would require students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities to submit to random urinalysis tests for illicit drug use. While I understand the desire to do more, I believe the policy will do more harm than good. My fellow students and I are organizing against this policy, which is ineffective, discounts student input, invades privacy and erodes trust.

In response to the proposal, I joined with my peers to form a group, Students Morally Against Random Testing (SMART), to mobilize opposition to student drug testing. Composed of more than 250 students, parents and alumni, we are an active voice at board meetings. We have asked the board to reject the drug testing proposal and submitted a petition with at least 450 signatures from high school students.
